Challenger Chronicle – Winter 2010
Hamilton Challenger Baseball Association Annual Christmas Party
Mark your calendars so you can plan to attend the HCBA Annual Christmas Party on Sunday December the 12th from 1 – 4 pm at Holy Name of Mary School at 161 Meadowlands Drive.
Our friends from Puppet Images will be putting on a seasonal show and a free pop and pizza lunch will be provided.
Players wishing to register for next season may do so while at the party and any trophies not picked up at the season’s ending banquet will also be available for pick up at that time.
SAVE!! The party will also be one of your last chances to purchase our baseball themed HCBA calendar for 2011. The calendars have a 16 month feature and we will be offering them during the party at the special price of two for ten dollars. (A great stocking stuffer idea too!)
The HCBA takes pride in being a caring member of the community and again this year we will be accepting donations of non-perishable food stuffs for the Hamilton Food Bank at the banquet. Boxes will be available for you to drop your donations while you are at the banquet.
And if you need another reason to come join us at the party, once again we will be visited by that jolly old elf himself and the association will be taking pictures with Santa as a keepsake of the event.
Come share some holiday cheer and celebrate another great year with your friends from the HCBA.
HCBA Board News
First, the baby news.
Congratulations go out to HCBA Treasurer Cheryl Dalrymple and her husband Bryan on the safe arrival of their daughter Autumn Elizabeth Nicole on October 29. Mom and baby are doing fine.
The association also expresses its best wishes to HCBA board members Amanda Murphy and Andrew Moore who will be married on November 27, 2010. Best of Luck to you both.
At the monthly HCBA board meeting in October, the board accepted the resignation of Andrew Mitchell as the Public Relations Coordinator.
At that same meeting, the board appointed Will Reid to fill the position now vacant as a result of Andrew’s departure.
The board also appointed Jennifer Ferby to the (vacant) Special Events Coordinator position. One of Jennifer’s first duties is this year’s Christmas Party. Will and Jennifer were volunteer coaches with the Pirates team this past season.
On behalf of the entire association, the board wishes to express a warm welcome to its two newest members.
To Our Sponsors
Everyone involved at the HCBA would like to take this moment to express our best wishes for the holiday season to all of our sponsors, supporters and their families. We would also like to once again thank you for your generous support, which is so vital to the associations success.
Appeal for Volunteers
There is an urgent need for volunteers of all description to assist the HCBA in making the 2011 Challenger Baseball season another success story. Volunteers are an essential part of everything the HCBA does and without whom we would be lost. Baseball experience is not a requirement as the games are just a small part of everything the association does. If you know someone who has a couple of hours a week to help us make some smiles please have them contact hcba.volunteers@gmail.com.
It’s a big family but, we always have room for one more.
Annual General Meeting
As part of the Association constitution, once a year an annual general meeting must be held. The old year’s finances are discussed and approved at that time as are the budget for the new season.
The AGM is also when a final call for nominations and elections if required, of all board positions whose terms have expired, will be held. Those association positions for which nominations will be accepted are: Association President, Administrative Assistant, Fund-raising Coordinator, Baseball Operations Coordinator, Special Events Coordinator and Stinger Division Coordinator.
The Association’s Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, February 27th, 2011 at Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre on Mohawk Rd East & Upper Wentworth St. The meeting will begin at 1:30 pm and is expected to last two hours.
Players who have not registered for the 2011 HCBA season by the end of the AGM are not eligible for the Early-Bird discount of fifteen dollars off the seasonal fee of $115.Players who register before the end of the AGM will pay only $100.
There will be someone to process your registration for the 2011 season at the AGM, just one more reason for you to plan to attend.
Let Me Introduce…
Hello, as part of my new duties and responsibilities as the Public Relations Coordinator for the Hamilton Challenger Baseball Association I will be taking over the editorial duties of the association newsletter so I felt an introduction was in order.
When I was approached by the association board about filling the opening they had for the PRC position, it was in part a result of a posting I had made on my blog Hangin’ in the Hammer entitled Meeting The Challenge, which talked about becoming a volunteer coach again with the HCBA this year.
And when they found out that I also had some experience as a web master, I seemed like a natural fit to fill the spot and I readily agreed to try my hand.
In the weeks to come the HCBA will be launching their new, improved web site and I will be working with the webmaster to see it is up and running as soon as possible.
I will also be looking into becoming more active on FaceBook (and other web venues) where we can utilize the power of their social networking to reach more of the people who want to find us.
Players, volunteers and sponsors alike, they are out there and with the plans we have coming in the future the HCBA will have a greater community profile.
People is what the HCBA is all about.
People who are players and are the central focus of all we do.
People who are volunteers and are the heart and soul of all our efforts.
People who are sponsors and supporters who are the life-blood of our success.
And there are people who haven’t heard of us yet.
I hope we can change that because as much fun as this all is, it’s also nice to share.
When I was asked why I volunteer, the first thing I did was smile and really that’s all the answer you need.
It makes me smile.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all.
And along the way we can share a smile.
Will Reid
And The Winners Is….
The votes are in and the name chosen for the new female HCBA mascot character is Baseball Betty.
